The Northwoods Live Music & Events Scene
Here's something people don't always expect about the Northwoods: there's live music almost every night of the week in the summer, and a solid calendar of shows and events through the rest of the year too.
It's not a big-city scene, and nobody's pretending it is. What it is, though, is consistent and surprisingly deep. Free lakeside concerts on Thursday evenings. Country bands at the bars. A world-class festival in Rhinelander that's been running since 1978. Open mics where the guy playing acoustic guitar turns out to be really good. And a distillery that hosts a weekly concert series because — well, why wouldn't you pair live music with small-batch bourbon?
If you're trying to find a show tonight, here's where to look.
Torpy Park Summer Concert Series — Minocqua
Free lakeside music every Thursday.
The Minocqua Island Business Association hosts a free concert series at Torpy Park in downtown Minocqua every Thursday evening during the summer. The park sits right on the lake, and the setup is simple: bring a lawn chair or a blanket, grab something from a nearby restaurant, and settle in for an evening of music by the water.
The lineup features the Lakeland Community Concert Band, the Northwoods Jazz Group, Dixie 6, and other local and regional acts. Shows start at 6:30 PM and run until dusk. The atmosphere is relaxed and family-friendly, and on a warm July evening with the sun going down over the lake, it's one of the best free things happening in the Northwoods.
Torpy Park, downtown Minocqua. Thursdays in summer, 6:30 PM.
Hodag Country Festival — Rhinelander
Four days, 25,000 people, and no VIPs.
The Hodag Country Festival has been bringing big-name country acts to Rhinelander every July since 1978, and it's grown into one of the largest country music festivals in the Midwest. The 2026 lineup includes Brothers Osborne, Steve Earle with Reckless Kelly, Meghan Patrick, and Jake Worthington, running July 9-12 at the Hodag Park grounds.
What makes Hodag different from most festivals is the culture. There are no VIP sections. Seating is determined by a chair line lottery where everyone spins a wheel — first-timers have the same shot at the front row as regulars. You can bring your own beverages (just no glass). Camping is part of the experience, and the whole thing feels more like a massive neighborhood party than a corporate production.
Tickets go on sale well in advance, and they sell. If you're planning a summer trip to the Northwoods, build your dates around Hodag.

Hodag Park Concert Series — Rhinelander
Free shows every other Tuesday.
Separate from the big festival, the Hodag Park Amphitheater in Rhinelander hosts a free summer concert series every other Tuesday evening. Shows run from 6:30 to 8:30 PM, June through September, and feature a rotating lineup of regional acts. Bring a chair or a blanket and enjoy the amphitheater — it's a well-designed space with good sound, and there's no charge.

The Black Bear — Minocqua
The bar with live music and a tiki bar.
The Black Bear has been a Minocqua fixture since 1947, sitting alongside Shishebogama Creek on Highway 70 west of downtown. Live music runs throughout the year here — not just summer — and the venue has a seasonal tiki bar, outdoor dining, and a game room that keeps things interesting on quieter nights.
This is a bar-first kind of place, and the music tends toward rock, blues, country, and whatever the band feels like playing. Check their schedule for specific shows, but on any given weekend in the summer, there's a decent chance someone's plugged in and playing.

Northern Waters Distillery — Minocqua
Thursday night concerts with craft cocktails.
Northern Waters runs a weekly concert series on Thursday nights through fall, winter, and spring — which means live music in the Northwoods when most other venues have gone quiet for the season. The tasting room is an intimate space, and the performers tend toward acoustic, folk, and Americana, paired with cocktails made from the distillery's own spirits.
It's a different kind of night out than the bar scene, and it fills a gap that the Northwoods has needed filled for a long time.

Campanile Center for the Arts — Minocqua
The performing arts anchor of downtown.
The Campanile Center has been bringing performing arts to downtown Minocqua since 2008, hosting live music monthly along with theatrical performances, art classes, and community events. The programming is eclectic — jazz, folk, classical, and regional touring acts all come through — and the space is comfortable and well-run.
If you're looking for something more curated than a bar show, check the Campanile's calendar. They tend to book quality acts and the tickets move.

Where Else to Look
The live music scene in the Northwoods is spread across dozens of bars, restaurants, and outdoor venues, and it changes week to week. A few more spots that regularly host live acts:
- Eagle River hosts several festivals including Stoneline Valley Music Festival and Midsummer in the Northwoods
- Bars and restaurants throughout Minocqua, Eagle River, Boulder Junction, and Rhinelander book bands on weekends, especially in summer
- Supper clubs like Norwood Pines feature live music on their patios during the warmer months
The best way to find what's playing tonight is to check local event calendars and social media. The Northwoods music scene isn't always well-advertised, which means the best shows are sometimes the ones you stumble into.
